Indiana MENTOR Gives Back as Part of Annual Volunteer Day
28 May 2015
Employees, their families, and individuals served by Indiana MENTOR came together as part of The MENTOR Network’s Third Annual National Volunteer Day to participate in service projects throughout Indianapolis. Volunteers partnered with the Children’s Bureau, Durbin Elementary, and NeighborLink Indy on Saturday, April 25. Volunteers also participated in a project with Anchor House on May 2. The event had been rescheduled due to weather.
Indiana MENTOR provides home- and community-based services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and youth at risk. A part of The MENTOR Network, a national network of local health and human services providers, Indiana MENTOR joined nearly 2,500 staff, their family members, and the individuals they serve in 50 volunteer activities across 17 states. Volunteers in Indianapolis braved pouring rain and strong winds to lend a hand in their community.
“The weather didn’t dampen our spirits,” said Dan Mohnke, Executive Director of Indiana MENTOR. “More than 50 staff members and their families came out and participated. It shows how committed everyone here is to our mission and how they make helping others a priority. We also invited individuals we serve to participate and were thrilled to share this day of volunteerism with them.”
With five programs in Indianapolis, Indiana MENTOR sought local volunteer projects that benefited individuals similar to the populations they serve as an organization or mirrored their mission of helping people thrive in the communities they call home. Children’s Bureau and Durbin Elementary support youth, NeighborLink Indy helps seniors maintain their homes, and Anchor House provides shelter for families in need. Volunteers helped with landscaping, cleaning, and maintenance efforts, which included painting the Children’s Bureau’s new center for youth who have been abused.
“I want to thank everyone who participated,” said Mr. Mohnke. “We’re proud to be part of the Indy community and are excited to partner with organizations that share our commitment to making a difference.”
